I was raised Catholic in a traditional Filipino family in the capital of the Philippines. The Catholic religion in the Philippines came from Spanish settlers and missionaries. From an early age, both my parents had to work abroad to sustain our family financially. Growing up without my parents’ presence was difficult, but Alhamdulillah, with the mercy of Allah (swt) my two brothers and I grew up decently. However, I did not have that spiritual guidance and in-depth understanding of the Catholic religion. When I was 25, I went to the United Arab Emirates to work, where my first attraction to Islam started. I had a lot of Muslim friends and non-Muslim colleagues and eventually converted to Islam. I was curious about Islam and the Muslim belief in God. And thankfully I met a man whom I adore for his modesty, and we usually met to talk about photography since we are both students from a photography class. In this meeting, we also spoke about Islam. Indeed, he gave me an in-depth understanding of the Islamic belief, the pillars, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sawa), Prophet Jesus (as), the oneness of God, and a lot more.
“ It was such a beautiful feeling to know that I have a substantial Muslim family. I found peace and solidity, something I had always missed in my life since childhood.“
As time passed, we decided to get married, and so I converted. Then I slowly learnt the prayers, avoided non-halal foods, started wearing my headscarf, and adapted to the new clothing style. From the depths of my heart, I firmly believed that Allah (swt) knows my struggles, and He knows every little, tiny step I took to become a better Muslim.
I can say that practising Islam changed my life in a much better way. I finally feel that sense of belonging.
I want to learn more and become a better Muslim because I want my children to have an excellent example to follow. I want them to see their mom love Allah (swt), pray, and be an upright and honest Muslim woman. I pray every day that they follow me in living and loving Islam.
