Unfortunately, Muslim women in the west have to go through many trials and tribulations. Not to discourage any Muslimah who wants to start wearing the Hijab, but it’s essential to know that these difficulties CAN happen, so everybody should be aware of them!
One of the struggles of a Hijabi is that sometimes it is harder to get a job. Nowadays, people and companies generally don’t have any problems with the Hijab at all! However, it depends on the person/company. You may get rejected when applying due to your Hijab, even if you have the qualities they’re looking for.
Another struggle is that females are generally seen in our society as weak. They are not as recognised as men in the same field. Even if a female colleague has the same qualities and skills as other male colleagues, she is often paid less. Especially as a female Hijabi Muslim, she can be seen as someone who is not only weak but also oppressed. Some ignorant minds believe that Hijabi women don’t dare to open their mouths and only observe. Men and women could take advantage of your shyness or not respect you if you let that happen.
Another struggle is that Muslims, in general, have gotten attacked more frequently in the last few years. It’s not that hatred attacks happen every day, Alhamdulillah, but they do happen. Just be aware and know that the Hijab makes you easily identifiable as a Muslim. Try to always go out with someone and avoid going out alone, and remember that Allah is the Protector.
By mentioning these three real struggles a Hijabi in the west faces or can face, it is not to discourage you from wearing the Hijab. On the contrary, we pray that one day you will wear the Hijab insha’Allah! Hijabis face struggles, but remember that Allah (SWT) is watching, and He (SWT) knows our efforts. The reward of a Muslim woman wearing the Hijab is so high that you will forget all your struggles. Allah (SWT) says in the Qur’an: “Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.” Chapter al-Baqarah, verse 286.
The hardships we face make us even stronger since we have to give 100% more than everyone else in society. It’s harder, but it increases our patience and faith
“I wouldn’t be as strong as I am today if I wouldn’t have worn the Hijab. When you prioritise the Hijab, people start to respect it more.”
Also, Allah (SWT) will open so many doors as you step closer to Him (SWT). So don’t be afraid. There will always be struggles no matter what you do, so choose wisely, insha’Allah.
